If there is one beach that perfectly captures the spirit of southern Sardinia, it is Su Giudeu in the Chia area. Fine light sand, crystal-clear water in Caribbean colours and a small islet rising from the sea create a scene familiar from travel brochures and commercials all over the world.
Su Giudeu Beach lies on the south-western coast of Sardinia, not far from the town of Domus de Maria. It stretches for more than a kilometre and joins the other beautiful beaches of the Chia area. Its biggest attraction is the rocky islet about a hundred metres from the shore. At low tide you can walk out to it through the shallow water, and the view from there is one of the most photographed on the whole island.
The sea here shimmers in every shade of blue and turquoise. Thanks to the gently sloping entry into the water, the beach is ideal for families with children, but snorkellers and paddleboarders will love it too. The clarity of the water and the wide open sands rank Su Giudeu among the most beautiful beaches in all of Sardinia.
The real treasure, however, lies behind the sand dunes. The Chia lagoon, also known as the Spartivento lagoon, is home to many species of water birds. The stars of the show are the pink flamingos, which often come here to feed and create a stunning contrast with the blue sky and turquoise sea. Alongside them you can also spot herons and other rare bird species.
The most beautiful moment comes in the evening. The sun slowly sinks towards the horizon, the surface of the lagoon takes on golden reflections and the islet off the beach becomes the perfect spot for photos. That is when you understand why Su Giudeu is the symbol of the Chia area and one of the most photographed places in all of Sardinia.
One final tip: come early in the morning or late in the afternoon. You will enjoy a calmer atmosphere, softer light for photos and a better chance of spotting the flamingos in the lagoon.
