If you’re spending your holiday in Alghero, you have the perfect base for exploring the most beautiful spots of northwest Sardinia. We’ve put together a four-day itinerary full of stunning beaches, picturesque towns, breathtaking views and authentic Sardinian atmosphere.
Day 1 – Alghero, Capo Caccia and the most beautiful beaches nearby
After you arrive, treat yourself to a stroll through Alghero’s historic centre. The narrow lanes, ancient walls and sea views will charm you instantly. The atmosphere of this town with Catalan roots is among the loveliest in all of Sardinia. In the afternoon, head to Capo Caccia, one of the island’s most famous landmarks. Steep white cliffs plunging into the turquoise sea offer unforgettable views, and you can also visit the famous Neptune’s Grotto. If you don’t have a car, there’s no need to worry — during the season a regular bus line runs from Alghero all the way to Capo Caccia. On the way back, enjoy a swim at one of the gorgeous beaches in the Porto Conte area. Among the most popular are Bombarde, Lazzaretto and the quieter Mugoni, surrounded by a pine forest.
If you don’t manage to get a reservation, don’t be disappointed. Around Stintino you’ll find plenty of beautiful beaches and coves. You can spend the day on a neighbouring beach, for example, and reach the iconic La Pelosa by walking along the coast or swimming across the shallow, crystal-clear water. After your swim, we recommend a stroll around Stintino’s picturesque harbour and a dinner of fresh fish or seafood.
Day 2 – Stintino and the famous La Pelosa
The second day belongs to one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe – La Pelosa. Its fine white sand and incredibly clear turquoise water are reminiscent of the Caribbean. It’s good to know, however, that access to the beach is limited during the season and you need to book in advance through the official Spiaggia La Pelosa website. New spots for the following days are released every day at 9:00 am, and in high season they tend to sell out quickly.
Day 3 – The coastal road to Bosa
The road linking Alghero and Bosa is considered one of the most beautiful coastal routes in all of Italy. It winds along the sea and offers plenty of spots worth stopping at to soak up the view. Along the way, we recommend a stop at Poglina beach, also known as Spiaggia della Speranza. This lovely beach with crystal-clear water tends to be much quieter than the better-known beaches around Alghero. On arriving in Bosa, you’ll be greeted by colourful houses scattered beneath the medieval Malaspina castle. Wander through the historic centre, visit the viewpoints over the town and soak up the unique atmosphere of one of Sardinia’s most beautiful little towns. If you have time to spare, you can also stop at Bosa Marina beach.
Day 4 – Relaxing at Maria Pia and an evening in Castelsardo
Take the last day at an easy pace. Spend the morning at Maria Pia beach, one of the most popular beaches right by Alghero. This long sandy beach lined with a pine grove offers plenty of space even in the summer season and is ideal for families with children. In the afternoon, head north to Castelsardo, one of Sardinia’s most picturesque towns. The historic centre sits on a rocky promontory above the sea, and its narrow stone alleys will carry you back several centuries. Climb up to the Castello dei Doria, which opens onto magnificent views of the entire coastline. Sunset in Castelsardo is truly one of the most beautiful memories you can take home from Sardinia.
One last tip
Sardinia isn’t just about the famous beaches. The most beautiful moments are often the ones you discover during stops along the way, over a morning coffee in a tiny village, or while swimming in a cove you found by chance. Give yourself plenty of time, don’t rush anywhere, and enjoy the island the way the locals love it – slowly, joyfully, and with a view of the sea.
